Google announced a series of new AI features at its Made by Google event today. One of these is a new Magic Editor feature called ‘Reimagine.’ For the uninitiated, Magic Editor was announced with the debut of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and allows users to harness generative AI to perform complex photo edits, like removing objects or deblurring fuzzy, indistinct photos.

Google has taken another step forward with the release of the new Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold (phew, long names). The search engine giant has rolled out a new AI-powered magic editor feature called “Reimagine” that lets you select objects in photos. Use the prompt to transform it into anything you want (within common sense, of course).

I saw this feature in action at a recent press event and was amazed.

Google’s new “Reimagine” uses AI to transform one object into another

A Google representative showed us a photo of a Pixel 9 series phone showing a car driving on a road surrounded by two cliffs, with an imposing mountain in the distance in the background.

On the device, a Google representative tapped the “Edit” button, then tapped the purple icon in the bottom right to bring up the Magic Editor tool. Then, by tapping on a road, the AI separated the road from the other elements in the photo, showing the user what was separated with a semi-transparent white overlay.

A Google representative also tapped cars, adding that they would like to separate them in Reimagine as a separate object in photos, in addition to roads.

He pressed the “Reimagine” button on the bottom right and a text field appeared: the road and car in the photo were selected and the Google representative typed in that he wanted to “reimagine” them as a raging river.

He hit submit. After waiting about 15 seconds for the generative AI model to work, the Reimagine tool sent me some great options:
